Part 1: Define at least one (1) key term from this week ( Please focus on National Cinema or Propaganda) AND elaborate on its significance in film history (feel free to reference and clips or films from this week to elaborate on your answer, if necessary). Part 2: 1) Offer a brief overview of one of our film screening’s from this week (Shanghai Express 1932, Triumph of the Will 1935, or Ara Osterweil on Kenneth Anger’s Fireworks 1947) make a claim on how you understand the film in relation to the moment in film history we are studying this week (engage with ideas from the lecture and readings Part 3: Provide an analysis of one (1) screen/moment from our screening of this week (Shanghai Express, Triumph of the Will, The River, or Fireworks) in relation to one key term or concept from this week (make sure you briefly define your key term/concept). 2) Make a claim that elaborates on what your analysis offers in terms of studying this moment in film history Tips: Keep part 1 brief: introduce the term, offer a definition for it, elaborate on its significance for this particular moment in film history. Keep your overview of the film(s) brief: 1-3 sentences is what I am looking for here. When you connect the film to its moment in film history, I am asking you to draw upon information in the readings and lectures that contextualizes the moment in cinema we are studying. You should be able to link the film to the moment in which it emerges and discuss that for at least 2-3 sentences . For your analysis, I recommend starting with a brief definition of a term (ex. synchronous sound) and then offer a thesis that explains how you will use said term to analyze the film and what results that analysis will yield. A thorough scene analysis requires a thorough overview of the scene in question. Pretend that your reader has never seen the film. SHOW them the scene you want to analyze as it relates/functions in the narrative, and then proceed into your analysis only after that. A main attribute of this assignment is connecting terms, concepts, and films to the film history we are discussing each day. When I am asking you to think of the film or term in relation to film history, I want to see you dig into the historical context of the moment we are studying, whether it’s about industry, economy, politics, etc. Proofread all of your work prior to submission. Make sure you are using complete sentences, proper citation practice (no works cited is necessary for this assignment, but in-text citations of readings are recommended), correct punctuation and grammar, etc. Lastly, be sure to italicize your film titles and to correctly name films and their filmmakers.
